The Byron at Byron Resort, Spa and Conference Centre in Northern New South Wales has, over the past two years, developed a solid reputation for inspired and luxurious conferencing.

The Resort has teamed with ‘Rainforest Rescue’, a local not for profit organisation committed to the future of the natural environment to offer a ‘Carbon Neutral Conference Package’. The amount of carbon dioxide created by each individual conference is calculated. This ‘carbon footprint’ includes the carbon dioxide (CO²) emissions released from travel, accommodation and general conferencing activities in relation to the number of participants in each conference. Rainforest Rescue then plants rainforest trees in the Byron Bay hinterland rainforest areas to ‘offset’ this CO² output.

The Plant A Tree Project was launched in May 2006 and is focused toward re-forestation to restore habitat for endangered species and to assist in absorbing harmful greenhouse gas emissions. The popularity of the project is evident, with 10,000 trees already sponsored for planting by individuals and businesses.

Every rainforest tree absorbs approximately one tonne of CO² over its lifetime. Sponsorship of one tree is $25.00. An average conference would need to plant one tree per delegate. The cost of ensuring a Carbon Neutral Conference with fifty delegates would therefore come to $1,250.00. The Byron at Byron Resort and Rainforest Rescue can also organise active participation by delegates in the planting of trees.

In recognition of hosting a Carbon Neutral Conference each delegate receives a Plant A Tree Gift Card, which acknowledges that their personal carbon footprint has been neutralised. Participating organisations also receive web recognition and other public relations acknowledgements. The Byron at Byron Resort, Spa and Conference Centre offers a professional, stress free venue for business events. The resort provides state-of-the-art facilities, five-star accommodation, a world class Spa and Wellness Centre, indoor/outdoor restaurant, infinity pool and poolside sauna all set within 45 acres of lush rainforest.
