The Newcastle Visitor & Convention Bureau and business event product suppliers are travelling to Sydney on June 24 for its annual showcase, supported by mice.net magazine.

Newcastle is booming right now in the business events field, most recently successfully hosting the Australian Tourism Export Council’s 2008 symposium. This event was attended by 550 delegates in late April, with feedback received from this high-profile group reporting that Newcastle exceeded expecations.

There are plenty of new developments in Newcastle that will further enhance the city’s MICE capabilities. New hotels under construction include:

• Grand Mercure Pinnacle Apartments – this four-star venue will offer approximately 40 serviced apartments, and is due to open in September or October 2008.

• Chiffley Hotel – located in Honeysuckle precinct close by the Crowne Plaza and within easy walking distance (five minutes) of the main convention centre at City Hall, the Chifley will offer 80 four-star serviced apartments. It is due to open in February 2009.

• Executive Inn, Mayfield ( part of the Wests group) will offer 72 four-star serviced apartments when it opens in February 2009. It will have an extensive health club and meetings facilities.

• After a three year restoration project, historic Fort Scratchley will reopen in July, with facilities for up to 300.

Register now for Newcastle’s Sydney Showcase by calling (02) 4974 2998 or visiting www.nvcb.com.au for further details. Places are strictly limited.
