Everyone is talking about ‘going green’ and it is predicted as one of the top three global trends for 2008. While it is a worldwide trend, locally two major Australian festivals are taking the lead by showing that going green is not just a catch phrase, but instead a vital step in progressive event management. Sydney Festival Domain events (NSW) and Tropfest (national) have partnered with BioWare in 2008 to propel them from being great events to great green events.

Traditionally, most of the disposable plates, cups and cutlery used at these festivals are made from petrochemical-based plastics, which generally end up in landfill. BioWare’s partnership with the 2008 festivals provides festival organisers with quality disposable tableware made from renewable plant resources that is both biodegradable and compostable. Therefore, this reduces the amount of rubbish that sits in Australia’s landfill and also minimises the environmental impact that large events can have.

Sony Tropfest program director, Morgan Rimel, said “Sony Tropfest is the world’s largest short film festival – and a great opportunity for a summer picnic. One of our highest environmental impact areas is waste, largely generated onsite from cups, plates, and napkins. Using compostable and biodegradable BioWare products for all our public and VIP catering was an effective way to reduce this impact.”

BioWare played a major role in helping these events justify and project a clean and green image. In addition to existing recycling and general waste streams, BioWare allowed event organisers to implement a third waste stream for compostable products including food scraps and BioWare products. Rather than sending food scraps and packaging to landfill, this waste is redirected to compost.

“BioWare disposable tableware is the future for these events. Not only is BioWare as functional as ordinary tableware for both food vendors and attendees, it also enhances the attendees’ experience as they can enjoy the event guilt-free knowing that they are doing their bit for the environment by choosing to use products that are made from renewable and sustainable resources” said BioWare Marketing Manager Chris Elliott.
