WHAT YOU DID: G1 Productions developed an urban streetscape concept for an area dedicated to one of the major alcohol sponsors of the V-Festival. Staging Dimensions executed the design created by G1 Productions. The festival ran over four cities starting in Sydney – Saturday, March 29, followed by Gold Coast the following day and Melbourne and Perth the following weekend.
G1 Productions provided a large marquee which they added decals to. To create the streetscape environment, Staging Dimensions constructed a 14m wide billboard wall which they affixed posters to. They constructed another two walls in a faux brick finish where graffiti artists displayed their talents as the day progressed. The design required they be enclosed by crowd barriers, flashing beacons and witches’ hats.
Numerous 40 gallon drums were painted in an aged look and used as standalone dry bars for guests to rest their drinks. A stage was also constructed with a grunge look and sound systems provided for break-dancer performing throughout the day.
SPECIAL TOUCHES: The scenic artist painted a “brick wall look” onto the flats the graffiti artists used. This was very effective and really added to the street look. The barrels were painted in a splatter design so they looked old and “grungy.”
All up, the effect of the billboard wall, graffiti wall and dancers (provided by G1) worked really well. The tent was busy all day with people enjoying the theme.
CHALLENGES/OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: Organisers had many challenges which they worked through on this event.
The first one was a tight timeframe. Initial contact to the first event was one week. Organisers had to manufacture stage flats for each event and source other components. The first transporter was loaded in a week for both Sydney and Melbourne and the second staged Gold Coast and Perth. Organisers worked on two complete sets because the festival ran over two weekends. The team pulled together and had everything prepped, loaded and ready to go out two days prior to the event. The festival was cursed with rain in every city, so the site for each event was like a mud pit. Bump-in schedules were delayed because vehicles were becoming bogged on the Gold Coast site so the site manager and security were only letting essential vehicles in one by one. The crew worked through this with patience, despite being covered in mud, and managed to meet deadlines on each occasion.
