Tropical North Queensland continues to shine brightly as the place to change your business latitude!
And it’s no surprise. Ranked number three Australian host city for major international conventions in 2006 (after Sydney and Melbourne), the Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef region is spoilt for event locations. Event organisers are continually impressed by the supportive, sophisticated business tourism infrastructure and the range of quality venues, such as the world class Cairns Convention Centre to boutique meeting facilities, accommodation options and the professional on-the-ground services that ensure smoothly executed events.

Many event organisers have already experienced Tropical North Queensland and after great success have returned to sample yet another of our abundant business tourism locations – Cairns, Palm Cove, Port Douglas, tropical islands and beyond. So many choices within one destination!

Add to this the ease with which delegates can move between the nearby Cairns International Airport to venues, accommodation, restaurants, shops and the hundreds of exciting pre- and post-touring options on offer in this stunning tropical location.

The Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region offers unparalleled holiday experiences, from our iconic natural attractions of the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage rainforests, to tropical islands, the delightful Tablelands and the dramatic contrast of the outback wilderness of the Gulf Savannah and Cape York.

There are many good reasons to change your business latitude to Tropical North Queensland and we look forward to welcoming you and your business soon!

Warm tropical regards,

Rob Giason
Chief Executive Officer
Tourism Tropical North Queensland

Tropical North Queensland spans from Cairns to Port Douglas and beyond including the surrounding islands. And between that distance lies many business event possibilities. Whether it is an experience like Skyrail or conferencing in an award-winning venue like the Cairns Convention Centre, this part of Queensland has many offerings. Surrounded with World Heritage rainforest and borded by the Great Barrier Reef this tropical region is also home to the spa capital of Australia, Palm Cove, and the resort village of Port Douglas. In-between there are a myriad of tropical experiences such as wildlife parks, rainforest tours, as well as reef adventures. This region is not only perfect for conferences, it is also a great destination for incentive rewards.

For international and interstate delegates Cairns offers an easy access gateway with an international and domestic airport located just minutes out of the CBD. Also, the region as a whole is becoming more attuned to the business events market and is flexible in catering for delegate needs. It seems any package imaginable can be put together to suit a group to showcase Tropical North Queensland as a whole destination.

The laid-back environment is a welcome change for many business delegates who may be used to the hustle and bustle of large cities. Tropical North Queensland offers a sun-drenched, laid-back environment in which busy corporate delegates can catch their breath, relax, and brainstorm new ideas - all the while experiencing they myriad of activities this region has to offer.

The incentive market can no doubt focus on this region as it offers so much for rewards packages. Whether it is rewarding a team or an individual, with the extensive amount of day spas, luxurious accommodation and award winning restaurants, planners will be spoilt for choice.

As well as a perfect place to relax, Tropical North Queensland offers a huge range of team-building opportunities, whether it is venturing to Cape Tribulation for a Jungle Surf through the canopy, or being able to take a photo with a koala and see the biggest pride of lions in Australia, this region offers it all.

As far as continuing the tropical theme through your event, Cairns, Palm Cove, Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation also offer unique off-site venues to make your function a truly memorable experience.

So submerge yourself in Tropical North Queensland and be rewarded with a unique, memorable and “brag-able” experience.

The city of Cairns in recent years has been growing in leaps and bounds in the business events market. And, it appears that if you turn your back for a moment, there is a new property under construction, an existing one getting a facelift, or a new attraction just waiting to be experienced.
It’s not unusual for Cairns to be a major centre for international and national conferences. With a substantially sized convention centre and host of accommodation options, this region is a contender and host for large business events.

Cairns Convention Centre director of sales Jenny Graham, says that during the last 10 months the centre has confirmed 29 future conventions which are expected to attract more than 15,000 delegates as well as have a $75 million economic impact for the region.

In 2010 the centre will host the International Conference on Atomic Physics which will include 1000 delegates and eight Nobel laureates. As well as this, the centre will also host the World Summit on Child Labour and Child Exploitation which will attract 800 delegates. And for the first time the centre will be home to the International Symposium on Microbial Ecology which will bring 2000 delegates into Cairns from 65 countries for meetings and research exchange.

In terms of development on the hotel and resort side of Cairns’ business event offering, a score of properties have undertaken refurbishments to ensure that delegates coming to the area can have a memorable stay.

The Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort now has fresh function spaces and accommodation. The $7 million renovation project was finished in May and included work on all 314 guest rooms, which now have new bedding, furniture, air-conditioning, carpets and curtains, as well as new mini bars. The conference and function facilities have been extended to include three meeting rooms and two boardrooms. In conjunction with this, the resort also has tropical breakout areas that will leave your delegates feeling refreshed. The Lounge Bar and outside terrace which overlooks the pool have also been renovated and is a perfect spot for cocktail functions.

Another new development in Cairns is the Blue Sky Brewery which promises an offering of function spaces, restaurant, brewery and beer with a tropical feel. A part of the CaPTA group, this new property will not only be a boost to the group’s already impressive portfolio, but will also be a drawcard for locals and travellers. Planned for a June opening, this brewery is located in the heart of the CBD and will be home to boutique beers brewed onsite, a comprehensive wine cellar, and modern cuisine which will suit the relaxed tropical atmosphere. The brewery will also have four function rooms which can cater for up to 400 guests.

The Cairns International has also undergone refurbishments including the pool and a brand new deck. When completed the space will be another great tropical venue for functions. There are also plans in the works to extend the hotel’s restaurant.

As well as being home to plenty of great new accommodation venues and sumptuous restaurants this region is also the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

With just a short boat ride from the Cairns Reef Terminal, delegates can take a day trip to Green Island or Fitzroy Island to get their first taste of the reef, or travel further to the outer reef for a full day of activity.

Cairns is considered Australia’s closest and easiest access point to the Great Barrier Reef and with more than 6000 species of wildlife, visitors are sure to see an array of beautiful coral and tropical fish.

It’s also important to take the time to immerse yourself in the World Heritage-listed rainforest that surrounds the region. Dense with exotic wildlife, stepping into the towering forests is a real treat. Rainforests are abundant with unique forms of plant life which many scientists in the area are still exploring.

Cairns is the perfect tropical city to host your next international or interstate conference with more than 7000 accommodation rooms and its award-winning convention centre. This port is also a great spot to start any meeting or incentive rewards program. As well as having the facilities to accommodate large groups it is the perfect environment to get the creative juices flowing and renewing life into busy corporate executives.

As well as working to put events together around tropical north Queensland, Stageworks Australia is the in-house audio visual and theming company for the Cairns International Hotel and the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, as well as the preferred supplier for the Shangri-la Hotel, The Marina, Cairns and the Cairns Convention Centre.

The team at Stageworks have state-of-the-art audio visual equipment and work in close partnership with hotels and venues in the Cairns area. The company not only services the local market but also creates events for interstate and international clients. Stageworks is renowned in the region for providing a high standard of service, technical expertise and attention to detail, as well as creating the event of your dreams. Some of the themes available range from “rainforest elegance” to “007- forever Bond”. And, if it’s not on their extensive list, Stageworks is sure to provide a theme that will suit.

This company takes the approach that themed dinners aren’t all in the decoration but rather about transforming spaces to work in with the aims of the event organiser. The company can also custom-design an event for a unique concept that you may have in mind, all the while promising to provide an evening of memories that will last long after the last delegate has gone home.

Cairns, and further along the coastline to Palm Cove and Port Douglas, offer a smorgasbord of tropical off-site event possibilities.

Whether it’s the Great Barrier Reef or World Heritage-listed rainforest, TNQ is the perfect backdrop for your next event. Imagine hosting an evening cocktail function where the venue is a rainforest-lined beach seemingly miles away from civilisation. In this part of Queensland anything is possible.

Companies such as Off-Site Connections work closely with filmmakers who choose this region for its cinematic beauty. A number of sets used for films over the years have been maintained by Off-Site Connections and provide a unique backdrop for companies to host their events in a one-of-a-kind space.

Sets used by Steven Spielberg for the film The Pacific and Hollywood romance comedy Fool’s Gold, for example, have been maintained and can be used for events.

Off-Site Connections has an inventory of more than 100 locations that can be used for functions.
Stageworks Australia is another event company highly experienced in off-site events - well-versed in turning outdoor spaces into true masterpieces.

The Tanks
Located at the Botanic Gardens, the Tanks is an eclectic space that has been used for tradeshows, dinner events and cocktail functions. Historically, the Tanks were three fuel tanks used in the Pacific War and were transformed in 1992 to initially house the Cairns City Council’s Youth Arts programs. Today it is an important space for the whole community. This area has been transformed into an artistic, community venue which has been used for everything from performances to intimate dinners and an art gallery for local masterpieces.

This venue is very popular for business events and has been used for an array of functions over the last two years including the Coco Cola Asia dinner, an awards dinner for the Australian Royal Institute of Architects and more recently the BMW 2007 national launch. The Tanks comprises three separate tanks that can be used for a whole event or tailored to a group’s needs. As well as the tanks this precinct also has outdoor facilities including an amphitheatre which is surrounded by lush rainforest and can cater for 250 guests, as well as The Figtree, which is a remarkable spot for evening cocktails and can seat 70.

This area is currently under redevelopment after it was registered on the State Heritage list in 2006. The redevelopments will expand the whole area into what has been called highly attractive, environmental parkland and a must-see destination which incorporates the best tropical botanical and cultural experiences of the region. Specifically for the Tanks, this redevelopment means easier access, especially for big groups travelling in chartered buses.

Centenary Lakes
Located in the Botanic Gardens precinct, this leafy venue offers many possibilities for event planners. Centenary Lakes consists of three interconnecting areas, the Rainforest Boardwalk, Freshwater Lake and the Saltwater Lake. The Rainforest Boardwalk takes visitors through the lowland swamp forest which is dense in towering paperbark trees, Alexander palm groves and pandanus swamps. This boardwalk would be perfect for food stations as a walk-through pre-dinner drinks style function, where guests can marvel at the vegetation.

The Freshwater Lake is located in the centre of this area and is a popular picnic spot for locals. The Saltwater Lake is home to a diverse range of plant and bird species and is considered a bird watchers’ paradise. Both lakes have spacious grassy areas and would be perfect for team-building activities or dinner under the stars.

Sister Cities Area, The Esplanade
This development has transformed the esplanade area and has opened up a whole new world of possibilities as a function space. Maintained by the Cairns City Council, this public space is mostly utilised as a relaxed barbecue area, however can be transformed into a dramatic event space. Many local event companies such as Off-Site Connections regularly use this space for high impact functions. This is particularly due to the ease of access of the area from the majority of Cairns’ city-based hotels, and the ability to offer a range of themes. When people visit Cairns they really want to experience the laid-back atmosphere, and this space encapsulates many of the city’s trademark attractions. The esplanade is big enough for a large marquee that can comfortably seat in excess of 600 delegates.

Also included in this area is the Fogerty Park Sound Shell, made up of a large grass area and covered stage which can cater for large groups. It is a favourite destination for large-scale concerts.
The Sister Cities area looks out onto the esplanade and can cater for more than 600 for a sit-down dinner.

The lagoon can also cater for large groups and is usually the spot locals flock to for New Year’s Eve celebrations. For event planners organising functions for groups of more than 500 the lagoon is perfect for dinner functions, team-building activities, or even just as a space for delegates to get some fresh air between conference sessions. And if the family is invited along to the conference, this area is perfect, with a central location and enough room for a swim and a run-around.

Delegates who may have been enclosed indoors in conference sessions will appreciate being able to make the most of the environment with any event held in the Sister Cities area. All you need is a little imagination and a creative theming and event company to deliver your dream and you’re sure to have a successful event that will be remembered a long time after the conference concludes.

Many of you who are city commuters working nine-to-five in an office may have found yourself daydreaming of escaping to a tropical island. Well, Dunk Island can make your dreams come true.
This is a spectacular getaway which has the facilities to host conferences and is perfect for incentive groups. Voyages Dunk Island has 160 rooms as well as a conference room that seats 180 delegates with additional break-out areas. And if having a themed event is on your mind, Voyages can come to the party and tailor packages to suit your dream event.

Dunk Island was recently host to the Pirates of the Caribbean and a group of 40 swash-buckling delegates arrived on its shores. Guests started the night with a scavenger hunt before the spectacular beachside dinner. Pirates teamed up to secure the loot and everyone was costumed in pirate threads.

Tropical North Queensland is renowned for its range of reef tours and wildlife experiences and it’s a must for any delegate to explore. The possibilities to tour the region extend from the reef and islands off Cairns and into the depths of the Daintree Rainforest. And the benefit for event planners in this destination is the huge array of activities. Many operators are fully aware of business event needs and are more than happy to tailor events to meet a group’s needs. Wildlife parks are now hosting dinner functions and team-building events and entertaining delegates is now the norm. Indeed, tropical north Queensland is a region that has grown as a destination for business events and is more savvy in pursuing this market than simply seeking the tourist dollar.

The Cairns & Region Convention Bureau has been instrumental in helping operators and properties become more aware and more creative in attracting business events. And the efforts are certainly paying big dividends.

There are so many ways to see this region - from the sky, from a bungy, from a yacht, or with a pair of goggles strapped to your face, and there are so many ways to tailor group packages to get the full experience. Another drawcard for delegate groups is that local operators like to work together to create packages that make it easier for organisers planning events for large groups. And that has to be a good thing.

Kuranda Scenic Railway
Stepping into a carriage on this train will be a different experience than that of many city commuters. This train makes its way from Cairns to Kuranda giving guests a very different perspective of the rainforest. There are some great group packages including “Murder on the Kuranda Scenic Railway” which takes guests on a journey of a different kind where they can solve a mystery. Indeed, Kuranda Scenic Railway offers a great array of group packages that can be tailored for delegates or used in incentive packages. Kuranda Scenic Railway also has a Gold Class carriage where guests are treated to a luxury experience. For large groups there is an option to charter trains for an exclusive experience. For more information, go to www.ksr.com.au.

Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve
Considered the only place where visitors can see the biggest pride of lions in Australia, this park is unique. For the
corporate business events market this wildlife safari will take you to Africa minus the long flight of course! With animals that range from hippos to cheetahs, Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve also has evening packages for delegates to experience the roaring lions and jungle animals at night. The park is in the process of planning more development which will include building six adjacent huts so that guests can really soak up the atmosphere overnight. The centre has had events in the past that make the most of the whole reserve, setting up food stations and tables between animal enclosures. One popular program is the Dine on the Edge package where guests can get up close and personal and watch lions feed. For more information about the packages available go to
www.cairnswildlifesafarireserve.com.au.

Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures
This park is renowned for its crocodile inhabitants but also has much more to offer than just a snappy show. With new group function areas Hartley’s can facilitate delegate groups of up to 300. As of May the park opened the Gondwana Gateway which has increased the function capabilities at the venue. The new spaces are well suited to team-building events or evening functions. At night, this area of the park becomes an “enchanted forest” with lit pathways and animal enclosures with nocturnal creatures. For more information about Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, go to
www.crocodileadventures.com.

Cairns Seaplanes

Taking a seaplane is the best way to see the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding islands without having to get wet! Seaplane tours take off from the waters near the Cairns Reef Terminal and once the engine is warmed up takes guests out over the reef for a bird’s eye view of Green Island, the surrounding mountain ranges and the reef. Cairns Seaplanes has two aircraft that can seat seven passengers. This tropical experience is perfect for an incentive reward, and Cairns Seaplanes has many packages available that include a flight to Green Island, a picnic pack including Australian sparkling wine, fresh fruit platter, beach umbrella, snorkelling equipment and a blanket. What more could you ask for? For more information go to www.cairnsseaplanes.com.

Skyrail

See the rainforest from a different perspective by jumping on Skyrail for a bird’s eye view of the dense canopy that stretches from Cairns to Kuranda. With gondolas that can seat up to six and the journey that spans more than seven kilometres, delegates can sit back and relax and enjoy the one-and-a-half hour trip over pristine rainforest. This experience is perfect as a part of an incentive package or a great way for time-poor delegates to see a lot of what the region has to offer in a relatively quick time. Operators such as Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park and the Kuranda Scenic Railway work closely with Skyrail who have packages where guests can travel one way on Skyrail and return on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Visit www.skyrail.com.au.

RnR White Water Rafting
The perfect team-building activity, RnR White Water Rafting will have your group pumping with adrenalin as they scale the rapids of the Barron, Tully or North Johnstone River. This experience is a part of the CaPTA group’s range of tropical experiences, with the company highly adept at creating unique team-building activities. Ropes courses and treasure hunt races can both be incorporated along the river. This is an action-packed way to experience the World Heritage listed rainforest. For more information about the team building options available go to www.raft.com.au.

Cairns Tropical Zoo

Many visiting this park for the first time will be able to experience things that are token Australian experiences, including the chance to cuddle a koala. Cairns Tropical Zoo has a range of animals in displays that are interactive for visitors to walk through. Events can be tailored for groups to meander around the zoo with a range of food stations along the way. Continuing the Australian theme, this park also offers bush themed nights which are perfect for groups to embrace the Australian culture of the bush. Breakfast functions are also popular and are hosted on the zoo’s restaurant deck which is surrounded by gardens. For more information about group packages available go to www.cairnstropicalzoo.com.au.

Jungle Surfing
Fly through the dense rainforest canopy and feel like “George of the Jungle” while Jungle Surfing. This activity would be a perfect team-building experience where participants literally swing from platform to platform in the jungle. A zip-line flying fox takes guests through world heritage-listed forests. Tours start from the forest floor and extend right to the top of the canopy. For more details about group bookings go to www.junglesurfingcanopytours.com.

When many think of Palm Cove thoughts of spa treatments, relaxing by a resort pool and tropical sunsets come to mind. And this is an accurate description of exactly what Palm Cove has to offer. With world-class day spas and resorts dotted along this small sandy strip, there is a myriad of options for incentive rewards.

In recent years Palm Cove has grown in leaps and bounds and well and truly come into its own. With updated properties, and some currently building large-scale extensions, Palm Cove now has some added attractions for the business events market. Indeed, a lot of things have changed along the esplanade of Palm Cove, with many properties sporting fresh faces after extensive refurbishments.
Following major works, The Grand Mercure Palm Cove has even more to offer delegates. With comfortable contemporary apartment-style rooms, this property is perfect for those conferences or incentive packages that include partners and families. With enough room to move around, and a pool big enough to keep a collection of kids happy, this property also has impressive function spaces. The pool deck alone would be a striking venue for evening cocktails.

At the other Rockford property in the area, Novotel Palm Cove Resort, there is a lot of movement happening as well. With part of the property currently being constructed in residential-style accommodation, and the conferencing venue being re-vamped, this property is getting ready for big events. Some options here include an open–air cinema, and special events on the golf course.
The Novotel Palm Cove Resort is another venue tailor-made for families. Comfortable apartment-style accommodation ensures there is plenty of room for the littlies as well as larger convention or incentive groups. This tropical oasis has a range of conference venues that are perfect for small to medium groups. Operators in this part of north Queensland are more than happy to tailor packages and stage events that will leave a lasting impression on your delegates.

Director of Esplanade Holdings, Peter Emery, who manages the new centres at the Grand Mercure and Novotel considers the changes to the property as a bonus for the region.

“It’s a particularly exciting time as we bring back to life the sophisticated village atmosphere of Palm Cove with its idyllic beach, better known to the upwardly trendy leisure guests staying in five-star resorts and day spas,” he said.

And the property isn’t the only drawcard for business events, as the Palm Cove events team has more than 50 years’ combined experience in the industry and is able to provide clients with an on-site creative director and audio-visual support for all types of meetings and events.

As well as events this group can also work on team-building activities that can include design and construction games, problem solving, artistic challenges, team rafting, kayaking, orienteering and a range of cultural activities.

Palm Cove is also an excellent pure incentive destination. Whether it is for individuals or groups, the opportunities to be completely spoilt are endless. There is an infinite supply of day spas that will leave you feeling like you’re floating on cloud nine. Palm Cove properties offer their own style of spa treatments and pamper packages ensuring that there is bound to be one style that is just right for each and every delegate.

But if luxuriating in a spa isn’t your idea of heaven, never fear because there are plenty of other options at hand. You can throw in a line at the Palm Cove jetty and retell stories of the one that got away (or the one that didn’t), escape to the reef for a day of diving or snorkelling, play a round of golf on nearby championship courses, spend some time browsing the local designer shops, savour some fine Palm Cove fare in the many restaurants along the main thoroughfare, or explore the Daintree Rainforest which is just a short drive away.
