The Perth Convention Bureau (PCB) secured meeting and incentive business worth more than $72 million in the 2005-2006 financial year.
Reporting on the bureau’s performance, executive chairman Graham Muir said the PCB had secured 138 national and international conventions and corporate meetings and incentive groups during the year. This translates into an estimated 38,540 delegates, more than 174,800 hotel room nights and an estimated $72.21 million delegate spend, up on the previous year’s figure of $69.24 million.
“The bureau managed to exceed its annual delegate expenditure target, which is a commendable achievement given the fiercely competitive global environment with destinations around the world chasing high yielding business tourism,” Mr Muir said.
“The additional $1 million the Government made available last year to support the State’s bidding efforts over the next three years has played a key role in helping to secure this business.”
However, Mr Muir said that if the PCB was to enjoy continuing success in what was becoming an increasingly competitive domestic and international marketplace, it needed to find ways of increasing its funding to successfully market WA as a destination for business tourism.
“The bureau fully supports the Government’s decision to implement an independent review of the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre’s (PCEC) arrangements,” he said.
“It is also vitally important that the problems that currently surround the PCEC are resolved quickly to ensure that the taxpayers get the maximum return on the State’s investment.”
The PCB’s sales results included two of the largest pieces of international incentive travel business ever secured for Western Australia. Mr Muir said that the two groups represented 3350 and 3000 participants and would generate spends of $7.62 million and $6.68 million.
