Night Safari’s flagship gourmet getaway, Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant, is climbing the popularity stakes of event organisers looking for a unique venue for the Business Travel and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) market.

Tucked in a cosy enclave of Singapore’s multiple award-winning Night Safari, this 600-seater restaurant offers a quaint dining experience amidst a rainforest ambience.

Diners can satisfy their hunger for good food as they whet their appetite for culture and adventure. The brilliantly re-captured design style features quaint village artefacts of bygone days. Coupled with the clever use of ambient lighting, the restaurant integrates well with the natural surroundings and transports diners into the heart of a traditional village setting.

The flexibility of this amazing restaurant to cater to various events is astounding. The tastefully decorated Chief’s Room is ideal for a cozy dinner of no more than 16 persons. For a truly private affair, opt for a customised gastronomic spread for an even more magical experience.

For cocktail parties peppered with nature, the terrace overlooking the ankole cattle is the perfect setting. Ankole cattle are native to Africa, and sport formidable upswept horns. Sip on an Uluphant, Ulu Ulu’s signature cocktail, as you watch these animals enjoying their evening meal amid a symphony of cicadas. Then partake in some heart-thumping action as the Thumbuakar dancers draw you into their infectious performance.

Ulu Court is yet another space to be considered. This function area offers groups of up to 100 persons some privacy from the main restaurant. Then watch culinary delights being whipped up at the live stations featuring unforgettable local staples to sizzling wok specials to tantalising seafood surprises or have a buffet crafted to your every desire. Since the restaurant’s opening in November 2006, this particular venue has grown in popularity and now caters to almost 10 dinner events monthly.

Better yet, combine the heartwarming ambience of dinner at Ulu Ulu with the thrill of dessert on a Gourmet Tram. After a fulfilling dinner, indulge in sweet desserts and hot drinks on a specially decked out tram as it traipses through the lush secondary forest of our nocturnal park. End your night with a “Creatures of the Night” show where visitors can learn more about the natural behaviour of some animals.

Ulu Ulu is an organiser’s dream, with its flexibility to accommodate varying group sizes and culinary options.

In recognition of their efforts in catering to the BTMICE market, Singapore Zoo and Night Safari have won awards by industry groups such as PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) and (Incentives & Meetings Asia) IMA. For enquiries on MICE packages and venues, please email sales@zoo.com.sg

South African Airways (SAA) sees the MICE market taking on an increased importance to the airline’s business on the Australia-South Africa route.

According to Thevan Krishna, SAA’s head of Australasia, several factors are playing a part.
“Many more companies involved in organising meetings, conferences and conventions see South Africa as a cost-effective, well-resourced and attractive destination for both large and smaller groups. There has been increased government and private sector investment to upgrade conference facilities in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban and, coupled with the competitive exchange rate of the rand, the country is seeing a boom in visitor numbers from this sector. Sun City also remains a big favourite for many groups,” Thevan said.
“A major benefit is that people can travel to South Africa direct on SAA services from both the east and west coasts of Australia and use our world-class convention facilities then go on a safari to one of our game parks or visit another African destination for a completely different holiday experience. Pre-and post conference tours are increasingly popular.
“SAA meets regularly with MICE players in Australia as well as corporates and we are seeing a substantial uptake in the number of groups we are hosting as a result.
“SAA has also been spending more on advertising and promotion of the MICE business in the past year and has hosted a few educationals as well.
“Ahead of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, South Africa is rapidly becoming a first choice destination. We have already secured some large groups for 2007-2008 and interest and enquiries are definitely on the rise,” Thevan said.

A truly unique experience for incentive, team-building, corporate or tourist groups. Toy Symphony commences with a guided tour of Sydney Opera House, concluding in the Concert Hall. Your guests are guided onto the stage while four musicians from Australia’s premier orchestra the Sydney Symphony are being led through a rehearsal by their conductor, in amongst a setting for a full orchestra.

The conductor, baton in hand, instructs the unsuspecting group to take a seat and choose from a variety of toy instruments including miniature trumpets, kazoos, bells and toy drums.

With no prior musical knowledge required, the group is divided into sections. The conductor leads the sections through a rehearsal of Mozart’s Toy Symphony, expertly guiding the group through the score with the melody being carried by the Sydney Symphony musicians. The group is transformed into an ‘orchestra’.

At the end of the Toy Symphony, your guests will receive an official certificate authenticating their performance on the world-famous Sydney Opera House Concert Hall stage - something that very few people in the world can claim they have experienced.
