Our editor said it but we thought we’d say it again here: well done to The Chaser team for lightening up the strict APEC 2007 proceedings with a bit of good old Aussie larrikinism. No doubt the police who were involved have been copping plenty from their mates since and are hopefully now having a laugh as well.

As Miles Clarke reports in his article on hotel occupancy levels (see page 10), some hoteliers aren’t as accommodating of PCOs as they have been in the past when supply substantially outstripped demand. According to many PCOs it is getting harder to forward plan as hotels are unwilling to commit on rates and allocations, obviously knowing they are going to fill beds anyway. But as those working in the real estate business know, a boom is almost invariably followed by a bust, and no doubt only those hoteliers who continue helping PCOs will benefit if, or should we say when, this occurs.

Back on APEC, it would be remiss of us not to send a big congratulations to all those hard-working individuals in the police and security forces who had to stand up and be counted on a number of occasions during the event as a small number of protestors took matters into their own hands and forgot they were supposed to be participating in peaceful protests. The police did it without the aid of their trusty horses (courtesy of the equine influenza), and that expensive water cannon. Touche!

When you’re in the travel business you can’t like news from MasterCard Worldwide that a survey they have done shows one in three Australians will reduce their overseas travel in the next six months, influenced by the impact of global warming. The latest MasterIndex of Travel by MasterCard Worldwide shows Australians are becoming more influenced by the environment when making their travel decisions, with travellers now giving greater consideration to holidaying at home. Bring on those carbon off-set programs we say!

It’s expensive and risky starting anything new so we thought we’d give the team at Wakamo and in particular Mark Harvey a big thumbs up for launching the inaugural Motivation & Incentive Expo held at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre on July 24 and 25 this year. With more than 1000 visitors to this first-time show you would have to say that it’s been a super success in a niche sector.
