Low-cost Asian carrier Tiger Airways is coming to Australia, offering cheap flights and more competition in the airline business. Brad Foster spoke with CEO Tony Davis recently.

Q: What prompted your decision to establish Tiger Airways in Australia?

A: Tiger Airways welcomes the opportunity to deliver consistent low fares in Australia for travellers. Fares are currently too high and our carrier aims to break the cosy duopoly of incumbent airlines and bring added value to savvy travellers down under.

Q: Can you give us a little background information on Tiger Airways?

A: Tiger Airways launched its inaugural flight from Singapore to Bangkok in September 2004. It now operates 18 routes across the Asia-Pacific region with nine (9) brand new Airbus A320 Aircraft.

Q: What are some of the reasons behind its success?

A: Tiger Airways follows the true low cost carrier business model that has been proven successful by Ryanair in Europe and Southwest in US. It focuses on keeping costs low so as to provide consistent low fares for reliable air travel across the region.

Q: When are the first flights scheduled to commence in Australia?

A: It is planned to commence later this year.

Q: Can you give readers an idea on the frequency of flights, destinations, etcetera?

A: The details will be announced later in the year. Tiger Airways will operate a combination of trunk routes as well as to regional airports.

Q: What about cost of tickets? How will they compare with current offerings?

A: It will be consistently low fares rather than current promotional offerings from the incumbents.

Q: Why did you choose Melbourne as your “home base”?

A: Melbourne presented the best opportunity for the successful launch of Australia’s first truly low fare airline.

Q: How many jobs are likely to be created?

A: We estimate about 1000 jobs to be created in Victoria.

Q: Do you have any plans to enter other markets? New Zealand perhaps?

A: We have no further details on this at the moment.

Q: A recent survey in Australia by Choice Magazine rated Qantas very poorly. What will Tiger Airways offer passengers? How will it be better?

A: Tiger Airways will provide consistent low fares with reliability and professional air travel services with options which the passenger can make of his or her own will and best suited to his or her needs.
