Independent research into the meetings and events industry in Australia by Micromex Research and commissioned by mice.net magazine has revealed corporates are spending up big in business events.

The research of almost 1000 readers of mice.net magazine conducted in June 2007 has found that 34 per cent were spending up to $50,000 per annum on meetings and events.
A further 20 per cent were spending between $51,000 and $100,000 per annum while just over eight per cent had $1 million plus budgets (see figure 1).

According to Micromex the mean value of event business likely to be placed with advertisers appearing in mice.net magazine was $141,300. Just over 75 per cent of all respondents were involved in meetings with the remainder responsible for a mix of events ranging from awards nights to product launches, incentives and charity events.

Of the 947 people who responded to the survey 42 per cent indicated they worked in the corporate world. Just under 17 per cent said they were “event organisers” and 8.7 per cent indicated they were professional conference organisers or meeting planners (see figure 2).

Survey respondents were described as being “of a very high quality” by Micromex because 85 per cent indicated they were responsible for organising/booking events within their organisation (see Figure 3).

The average number of attendees per conference/event respondents organised/held was 321 attendees (see Figure 4).

In business terms, the major issues affecting the respondents’ day to day operation were finding and retaining qualified staff (40 per cent), technology (34 per cent), undercutting from competitors (25 per cent) and cash flow (22 per cent) (See figure 5).

Destinations – what’s hot and what’s not
The survey also asked respondents what destinations both nationally and internationally they were considering for future meetings and events. Details on this as well as other responses will be featured in the next edition of mice.net magazine.
