What did you want to be when you grew up: In marketing for a hospitality/service or tourism product – and I’ve been fortunate in achieving some fantastic employers, including the AJC. Your first job: Selling orange juice door-to-door at 13. Your first pay packet: $1.00 for a two litre orange/mango juice. Your first break: A two-year hotel management scholarship but had to sit out on all beverage-related classes as I was 16 years old. Describe your current role: My main responsibilities are to manage a team, generate business and to achieve budget and profits for a landmark iconic destination. The best part of your job: Showcasing a portfolio of 14 flexible event areas (indoor and outdoor), which allows us to host exciting and special events. The worst: I enjoy all aspects of my job, although checking my ‘inbox’ can be undesirable. Who has inspired you: My mum – a single mother with five kids who was always able to feed the family, earn an income and provide a disciplined upbringing in a rough neighbourhood. Your best quality: My experiences with the hotel, tourism and retail industries has given me sound training and knowledge in customer service and maximising opportunities. Your worst quality: Being diplomatic when I know I am right. Your best achievement: Finalist for the American Express Junior Businessman of the Year in 1994. Where do you want to be in 10 years’ time: Fit, healthy, employed and well travelled.
