Since the release of direct flights across the Tasman late last year, Rotorua has been on the radar for many an Australian event organiser. According to local venues, business is booming and more groups are hailing Rotorua as their next destination for conferences and events. Destination Rotorua Convention Bureau manager, Denise Siviter said trans-Tasman interest is growing and it’s been great to have representation on the ground.

“With the direct flights from Sydney to Rotorua, the convention bureau has seen a big increase in interest out of Australia and with a sales representative based in Sydney quoting has never been easier.

“Debbie has been extremely busy catching up with professional conference organisers and corporates since her appointment in February.”

Ms Siviter also said daily quotes are being requested for both large conferences and the more exclusive smaller incentives, and a number of which are now in the final stages of being confirmed.

“With a large range of accommodation from the exclusive Tree Tops Lodge, Solitaire Lodge, Peppers on the Point through to some leading hotels, Millennium, Novotel, Rydges; Rotorua is well set up for the MICE market,” she said.

“Rotorua has an amazing array of activities and is now marketing these as Thrill Me, Free Me and Pamper Me. The options are endless and can also include activity at some of the many offsite dining venues.”

And for Aussie event planners thinking of Rotorua for their next event, Destination Rotorua has put together a new familiarisation schedule. For further information contact the convention bureau at

Bucking the post-recession trend, there sure is no stopping the influx of interest for Destination Rotorua, and the team at Events & Venues is no exception.

Events & Venues Rotorua sales and marketing manager Brett Jeffery said the group has had to grow its staff numbers to help facilitate growing business levels and increased sales activities.

And to cope with the influx of interest, Judy Brown has joined the team in mid-May as a sales representative and will be promoting the group’s range of venues.

Mr Jeffery said Ms Brown’s strong industry skills and experience will be valuable to address the growth of business.

“She will play an important part for us in further developing Rotorua’s growing conference and events business,” he said.

“Judy has experience in retail, airline, attractions and NTOs, in New Zealand and the UK, and these skills will enhance our customer focus and provide opportunities for Events & Venues to explore fresh markets.”
Events & Venues Rotorua is one of the largest venue management companies in New Zealand and look after the Energy Events Centre, Rotorua Convention Centre, Rotorua International Stadium, Te Runanga Tea House, Rotorua Soundshell and Civic Theatre. It’s possible to meet on Rotorua’s picturesque waterfront at the Novotel Lakeside, which offers corporate groups a range of conference spaces that make the most of that view.

The Novotel Rotorua Lakeside includes199 rooms, a spectacular penthouse, and is just 10 minutes’ walk from the city centre, Energy Event Centre and Rotorua Convention Centre. The hotel also includes an indoor spa and fitness centre, restaurant, and bar.

Corporate groups will be able to make the most of the seven purpose-built conference rooms, which includes a large space that can seat 350 delegates as well as a range of smaller spaces ideal for boardroom meetings. All of the meeting spaces are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology, AV and wireless internet.

And groups will also love the Maori cultural centre that features a nightly hangi and concert show. Other nearby attractions include a host of water activities on the lake, a golf course and thermal reserves.

Off Road NZ
Off Road NZ has produced a new experience, Raceline Karting, and opening this month will be ideal for team-building exercises for corporate groups. Regarded as New Zealand’s newest and longest ‘A-rated’ outdoor kartsport circuit, Off Road NZ now offer the experience of kart racing in a completely safe environment. Your group will be able to get the buzz and adrenaline of real kartsport racing in a state-of-the-art four-stroke 390cc Sodi kart imported from France exclusively for Off Road.

Off Road NZ’s marketing manager Sandra Blackledge said as far as they know, no other company in New Zealand or Australia is offering this quality of hire kart.

“The chance to experience the sensation of ground rush in karts that reach up to 100kph will make this new experience pretty special,” she said.

Off Road NZ director Ian Tew said the development of the track was a result of a close relationship with the Kartsport Development Trust, whose patron racing champion Greg Murphy developed the Rotorua International Kartsport Raceway. And when the trust isn’t running national and international meets, Off Road NZ is able to access the track for corporate groups and individuals.

“The development of the track has been a labour of love for the many people involved,” he said.
“It was a huge project and its completion is a real credit to the Kartsport Development Trust.”

Agrodome’s team-building adventures
Agrodome is all about adrenaline pumping experiences, and makes the ideal destination for a range of team-building and incentive programs. The property is home to bungy jumping, the Zorb, the Swoop, Freefall Xtreme body flying, Agrojet, Shweeb rides as well as Helipro rides.

If that isn’t enough, Agrodome can organise team-building itineraries that incorporate the Agrodome’s 350 acres of farmland. Organisers can choose from a range of authentic farming experiences such as the electric fence challenge, human dog trial, swamp crossing, building a fence, as well as a host of cryptic challenges. There’s also the option of the Amazing Farm Race where groups are briefed on the challenge and given a team colour and a host of clues. As the race progresses the challenges become harder and incorporate mental and physical clues. Teams must work together through each challenge to find their final destination.

There’s also another option for corporates that split up into teams in a relay-style event where groups are allocated a colour or quirky animal name. Agrodome can incorporate farm team-building experiences with adrenaline activities for an all round fun day.

And after a long day of excitement your group is bound to be hungry. Luckily there’s plenty of room at Agrodome to host a relaxed barbeque dinner or for something more special why not dine under the vines.
For more information about the team-building options on offer go to www.agrodome.co.nz.
