Singapore storms into cloud-based information sharing
SINGAPORE – The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is the first NTO to come onboard as a partner in Microsoft’s data-sharing platform, Project Nimbus – Asia’s first cloud-based information marketplace. Project Nimbus aids innovators in development of applications by offering easy access to publicly-available information.
Through this collaboration, STB aims to be a frontrunner in driving and promoting innovation in the digital domain. An application could be built, for example, for a corporate meeting planner to send RFPs to all MICE organisers in Singapore using the information provided. The STB has published comprehensive listings of data, including hotels, attractions, business events and MICE organisers, on the Project Nimbus site.
“By sharing information on a common platform and in a coherent user-centric manner, we want to enhance MICE players' abilities to organise successful events by being able to tap into a rich repository of information on MICE service providers and a wide array of amenities and offerings. At the same time, we hope to promote innovation and encourage the creation of new services and applications that will enhance the experiences of business and MICE travellers. For instance, with the City Adventure Guide smartphone application, business travellers will be able to tap into a wide spectrum of attractive deals and promotions at their fingertips,” STB director of strategic marketing, Paul Tan, said.
"Moving ahead, in the longer term, the platform could enable business event industry partners to network, form business alliances and exchange business opportunities. Potentially, the platform could be the business and MICE players' one-stop portal of information to create services and applications that will enrich the business travellers' experiences."
To get the ball rolling, STB has helped develop two sample smartphone applications to cater to travellers and visitors arising from this collaboration. They are the City Advantage Guide, a suite of lifestyle-related deals and privileges for business travellers to enhance their experience in the city; and, Wassup?, a youth-oriented location-based application providing youth-centric information such as F&B, nightlife and entertainment offerings, movie listings, youth activities, and social networking functions.
