DMC: Destination China were the key to the event working effectively. They had the local knowledge, the local language and the international humour. Australian native Gunther and his team were not only behind 12 months of preparation with numerous conference calls and two sites, they were there until the VERY last stride past customs, and that was three days after the event had been completed. Between the Grand Hyatt Shanghai and Destination China’s staff, the bar has definitely been raised.
WHAT YOU DID: Five night business conference with three days of product expo and update seminars.
SPECIAL TOUCHES: This year the group kept its product updates available across two days so guests could attend what they wanted at whatever time they wanted and be massaged by professional masseurs at the same time. Usually hotel space was either booked out or cost prohibitive over an event of five nights to accomplish this but it worked this year due to the flexibility of the hotel.
CHALLENGES: Attempting to calculate the Yuan Renminbi to the Australian dollar.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: When it rained on their leisure day they asked the hotel for umbrellas…and they gave them to us.
CLIENT COMMENT: The destination was an ‘unknown’ when it was announced back in June 2005. We promoted the culture more than the destination, ending up with 480 extremely overwhelmed people due to the cosmopolitan nature of this magnificent city. The hotel, AV and ground services are equal to any we have used.
