Millennium acquires Metropolis
New Zealand’s largest hotel group Millennium Hotels and Resorts has added The Metropolis Hotel Auckland to its portfolio. The group officially commenced management of the hotel from June 1, with the period of management running for three months, after which time a tender for permanent management will take place. The Metropolis Hotel Auckland is a welcome addition to the group, offering an exclusive accommodation experience in New Zealand’s gateway city.

Located in the heart of the CBD opposite Albert Park, the hotel is within one minutes’ walking distance of Queen Street and High Street. From here guests can visit the Auckland Art Gallery, the Aotea Centre for the latest shows, Sky City Casino, or the Viaduct, a hub for restaurants and bars. The hotel offers spacious studios and one and two bedroom apartments, many with balconies offering views. Each studio is furnished with natural timber, stone and marble and comes with a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, home entertainment system and central heating with air-conditioning.

Guests can relax within the hotel with a 22 metre heated lap pool, sauna room, spa, room service and bar. The hotel also offers extensive business services including high speed broadband internet access.inema with a fully licensed cafe and wine bar recently opened in

Heritage Rotorua goes green

Heritage Rotorua recently became the latest Heritage property to become Green Globe benchmarked for sustainability. This achievement represents 92 per cent of all Heritage and CityLife Hotels’ room inventory now being Green Globe benchmarked.

Heritage Rotorua had previously been associated for more than five years with a local regional sustainability charter, and general manager Marcus Keenan welcomed the opportunity to cement the hotel’s environmental commitment by benchmarking with Green Globe.

“We are delighted to be benchmarked and look forward to the great results achieved in minimising our environmental impacts and reducing energy consumption,” Mr Keenan said.

The Qualmark four-star rated Heritage Rotorua is located adjacent to the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve and Historic Village. The 203-room hotel offers a range of modern hotel rooms through to suites, plus a thermally-heated outdoor swimming pool, spa pool, gym and the state-of-the-art Qualmark-awarded Pohutu Maori Cultural Theatre. Locally-renowned restaurant Chapmans also underwent an extensive refurbishment in late 2006, and offers a relaxed environment to enjoy local cuisine either a-la-carte or buffet.

Heritage Queenstown opens Icon centre

Heritage Queenstown’s Icon Conference Centre was officially opened in early May, with the event celebrated at a special luncheon in the brand new venue overlooking Lake Wakatipu and with The Remarkables in the distance. One hundred guests including New Zealand Minister for Tourism, Damien O’Connor, were on-hand to witness the official opening ceremony.

Heritage Queenstown’s general manager, Carey Norton, described the conference centre’s potential for the conference and incentives market in his opening address.

“We believe the Icon Conference Centre fills a gap in the Queenstown market for an exclusive venue for conferences, weddings and special events that enjoys great views of the pristine end of Lake Wakatipu, and embraces many majestic icons of the Queenstown region in a sweep of the eye,” he said.

Mayor Geddes of Queenstown Lakes District Council warmly welcomed the invited guests, before the Minister for Tourism and the group executive director of Heritage Hotel Management, Ms Ho Chai Kun, officially opened the centre. Built on the lakeside of the hotel, the Icon Conference Centre enjoys stunning Lake Wakatipu views and houses a conference room for 200 people theatre-style or 160 for a banquet event. The roof top level has been designed especially for outdoor functions.

Modern facilities, rural charm

Copthorne Hotel & Resort Solway Park, Wairarapa has been upgraded to the tune of $4.5 million, with an additional $2 million being spent in the next few months, making it a great option for intimate conferences just outside Wellington.

Business development manager, Alex Beijen, says professional conference organisers are taking a lot of interest in the new-look hotel and resort.

“It ticks all their boxes for its accessibility, diverse facilities, activities, superb style, comfort and location. Our setting in 24 acres of gardens and native bushland is an excellent environment for creative thinking, team-building and relaxation. A large 10-bay golf driving range, two pools (indoor and outdoor), spa, garden bush walks and jogging trails make on-site team-building options easy and diverse,” he says.

With 80 dedicated staff looking after 102 rooms, three bars and three restaurants on-site, catering for groups of up to 500 delegates, high levels of service are a given. All seven rooms in the new conference centre are equipped with the latest audio and presentation systems while the experienced conference team can develop a package to suit a range of different groups, time frames and objectives.

“We encourage conference organisers to make the most of the land and its setting,” Mr Beijin says. “For example, we can arrange garden planting days for delegates, where produce grown on-site will benefit the local community.
