A brand-new inner-city convention venue is nearing completion at Awapuni Function Centre in Palmerston North. The venue is the largest of its kind in central New Zealand with The Silks function room on the second floor offering magic views and a capacity to seat 500 delegates.

Well set-up for functions with a series of pale coloured “black out” curtains to provide shade or to divide the room into sections, special ceiling hooks for lighting rigs, a bar, a tote for real or fake betting, and a dance floor/banquet serving area, The Silks promises to be one of the most popular function venues in the country. A series of large sliding doors open out onto a spacious balcony, which provides an ideal space for session breaks or alfresco dining.

Other highlights of the facility include function space on the ground floor surrounded by terraced gardens, corporate suites, and connections to the existing members’ facility which houses a maze of meeting and function spaces.

Boutique Cinema
In other venue news, a boutique cinema with a fully licensed cafe and wine bar recently opened in Feilding (the 13 time winner of the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Award).

Focal Point Cinema is described as a stylish venue for intimate functions and corporate events and features high quality, modern cinema entertainment, and plush 1920’s decor.

There are two cinemas available for hire – a 40-seat and a 16-seat. Both offer comfortable two-seater couches with wide armrests with enough space to place refreshments.

Look out in July for the latest Hawke’s Bay Meeting & Incentive Planner. Final finishing touches are underway with the planner having grown this year to provide event organisers with an even better overview of the C & I product in the region. Hawke’s Bay will be represented at ‘Meetings’ by four exhibitors this year, with the Crown Hotel, as a first-time exhibitor. A further extension to the property in November 2008 increases the hotel to 39 rooms, making it a great boutique conference and incentive venue. The Napier War Memorial Conference Centre stand will provide the opportunity for buyers to meet Scenic Circle Te Pania’s new GM Kerry-Ann Gibbs, to discuss accommodation in conjunction with the War Memorial. The Hawke’s Bay Opera House will be brimming with creative ideas, having been fully operational now since November 2007, since their extensive refurbishment and the Convention Bureau has some exciting new products to discuss.
